Product Owner - Traps, Things not to do

From the Product Owner perspective:

  • Delegate away their authority
  • No decision making authority
  • Not building the right software
  • Not communicating back with "stakeholders"
  • PO doesn't know what business wants
  • Underestimate the size of the work
  • Defining the wrong product
  • Believe in business case too much
  • Not checking back with customers
  • PO does inspect and adapt
  • Requirements "churn"
  • PO not attending demos
  • Disengaged PO
  • PO not inviting stakeholders to demos
  • Not grooming PB
  • Not taking feedback from stakeholders

From the Scrum Master perspective:

  • SM own Product Backlog (mechanics & Prioritization)
  • SM compensates for poorly trained PO
  • SM replacing disengaged PO
  • SM ignoring PO
  • SM not setting expectations
  • SM folding to PO wishes
